HISTORY
FACT ONE :: Forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest, as the saying goes. But hey, if you'd grown up in a place where everyone behaved the same, you'd go for the guy that was different, right? Regardless of whether or not you were already married? ... Well, it doesn't matter what you would do. For the twenty-six-year-old Gloria, James was the most exciting person she'd ever seen. She stumbled across him in an alley on a particularly rainy night, crouched breathless behind a trashcan. He told her stories, stories about frightening creatures called "Reapers" who came down and killed people like him. People from the other side of the wall. To that, Gloria replied, "But no one comes from the other side of the wall." James admitted that he came from a long family line that stretched back fifty years, to the beginning of The Now. His parents were the first Imperfections in recorded history. Somewhere along the line, their "casual run-in" became "less casual" and moved a "run-in" in bed. Without protection, mind you. James was gone the next morning, and Gloria didn't want anyone finding out she'd had an affair with a cold-footed Imperfection. She went straight home and dragged her husband to their room. Nine months later, a Karlee popped out. While she obviously had some of Gloria in her, she held no trace of Emile. Karlee bore more semblance to James than anyone.
FACT TWO :: In the beginning, Karlee was just an average, ignorant kid. She grew up brainwashed, thinking The Government knew everything. From birth, she was taught that mercantilism was the norm, and that man kind had abode by its guidelines since the dawn of time. In her mind, she existed to serve the mother country, which, in this case, was The Government. Karlee also grew up thinking that Emile was her father. Never mind the fact that she didn't share a single trait with him. The annual results of her mental and physical examinations reveal that, had she continued down the path she was headed, she would've made a fabulous addition to the Perfection Police, and perhaps even a great Reaper. But she didn't remain on the path -- she deviated.
FACT THREE :: Deviation wasn't what she'd intended, believe me. She was quite content with a roof over her head. No -- one night, when Karlee was sixteen, she awoke with a fire burning near her stomach. The pain was crippling. She screamed for her mother. Gloria carted Karlee off to the injury treatment center. They set an MRI up to determine the source of Karlee's discomfort, but the doctors couldn't recognize what they saw in the images. They'd never come across it before. So they made a call they were told only to make in the most dire of circumstances -- they called The Government. Bio-engineers wheeled Karlee over to the lab. There, it was confirmed: appendicitis. Karlee's appendix was safely removed, but the damage had already been done. Gloria's relationship with an Imperfection was at last brought to light, and as punishment, her daughter was sentence to death.
FACT FOUR :: Death never came. The engineers planned to do it by lethal injection -- inserting poison into the IV strung from Karlee's arm. Call it a woman's intuition, call it survival instincts. Whatever it was, the second Karlee saw the engineer advancing with the syringe, she knew something was wrong. Every fiber of her being screamed to run, but she knew she couldn't. If she ran, they would react and catch her. So she feigned sleep as the engineer inched closer, closer, closer... Once he got within reach, Karlee snatched the needle and impaled him with it. As he sank to the ground, Karlee [ROBIN IS A BOSS NINJA ADMIN (=o! scandalous)] stole the access card pinned to his pocket and crept out the door. By this time, The Government security had been warned of a breach. In the halls, sirens were blaring and lights were flashing, bathing the walls in an eerie red glow. Karlee tip-toed along, checking around the corners. If she saw a security guard headed her way, she would crouch low and spear the guard with the needle as he or she came round the corner. Then she made it out to the complaint room and the lobby. There was a crowd of Perfections waiting. They scattered in blind fear as Karlee barged through, a line of security guards hot on her tail. The confusion of the Perfections was what saved her in the end. Once Tally made it to the streets, she grew paranoid. She spoke to no one and constantly threw glances over her shoulder.
FACT FIVE :: Home was, of course, the first place she went. Only she never made it through the door. About a block off, Karlee noticed the barricade of Perfection Police cars outside her house. She turned and ran -- straight into a man. Her first instinct was to stab with her needle, but all it took was one flick of his wrist and the needle flew from Karlee's grasp. That's when she got a good look at him. .. It was almost like looking in a mirror. After a few minutes of dramatic staring, James said, "It's you."
FACT SIX :: Quickly, so as to dodge the team of Reapers headed their way, James explained to Karlee that he was her birth father. He told her nothing else, except to trust him. Then he took her hand and dragged her straight toward the wall. Karlee shielding her face with her arm, preparing to be torn to pieces by bullets. The automatic guns fired up, but their bullets never struck her. James didn't drag her into the wall -- he dragged her into a secret tunnel. After a few hours' walk, they were on the outside. The next year was spent in the wilderness, James teaching Karlee how to hunt, raid factories, kill robots, live off the land... every quintessential element to survival outside of The Now. More importantly, he taught her how to fight. Guns, knives, tree branches -- anything could be made into a weapon. Karlee learned quickly, thus proving the Perfection Polices' theory that she would've made an amazing Reaper. Once he'd taught her how to handle herself, James thought it would be a good idea to take her on an expedition into the city.
FACT SEVEN :: They made it through the tunnel without a cinch. As matter of fact, everything would've run smoothing if it hadn't been for Karlee. She didn't listen to James when he told her to stick behind him. Never mind the fact that he'd warned her about the video cameras surveying the streets, Karlee wanted to see her mother. She wanted to let the woman know that she was okay, that nothing had happened to her. What she failed to see were the wanted posters boasting her face plastered about the city. The second she got too close to her mother's house, a squadron of Perfection Police cars pulled up, blocking any exit. James caught Karlee as the first police officer moved to shoot. He swept her into the house, explaining it would be easier to wait inside and fight the police off in smaller numbers than taking them all on at once. He also told Karlee to book it out the back door first chance she got. Karlee did, and she came out alive. ... James did not. Karlee dove through the tunnel and spent a good few weeks mourning the loss of her family. Then she hardened. It was then that she pledged to save as many Imperfections as she could. For her father.
