HISTORY
FACT ONE :: Drew's early childhood was the epitome of normalcy. His parents clothed him and fed him according to average Perfection standards and rocked to sleep at night with their mantra of, "The Government knows all, we know nothing". They were the picture of a perfect Now family. All of Drew's outfits matched, with nary a spec of dirt or grime marring them. His shoes were shined, his hair was brushed, his teeth sparkling white, and his weight average for a person of his height. Just like everyone else.
FACT TWO :: During his toddler days, Drew's mother would always take him to department stores with her to purchase clothing. One time, while Drew was walking along, clinging to his mother's hand, he saw a man knock a pair of pants off its shelf. Being the perfect young man his mother had raised him to be, Drew stopped and released his mother to help the man pick up the pants. When the man bent over, a beam of light glinted off a knife concealed on the inside of the man's jacket. Drew froze when he saw it, looking on with wide eyes. The man smiled at him. "Don't you worry about that, Son." He returned the pants to the shelf and carried on his way. The evil glint in his eye was forever burned into Drew's memory.
FACT THREE :: When Drew was five, Randolph decided his son was old enough to learn to read. He took Drew along when he left for the library that day. They spent hours in the children's section, flipping through beginner reading books. Randloph taught his son the alphabet and some basic words. He took Drew with him to work every day for the next few weeks. Drew was a fast learning, eating up everything his father taught him. He was reading exceptionally well by the end of the month. Ever since then, he hasn't been able to put books down. In fact, his sixth birthday present was a dictionary.
FACT FOUR :: Danny entered Drew's life when he was seven. Danny was the same age, but he was ten times more interesting. Drew was drawn to the boy the moment Danny entered the library. Tears laced Danny's jeans, and he wore a leather jacket. Danny met Drew's gaze from across the room and immediately headed over. Sliding into the seat across from Drew, Danny inclined his head. "What's your name?" They got to talking, exchanging names. Danny asked Drew other trivial questions, such as his favorite color (blue), favorite pass time (reading), and what his parents did for a living. Then Danny paused for a long while, contemplating. At last, he nodded his head. Grabbing Drew's forearm, he said, "You should come somewhere with me."
FACT FIVE :: Danny was Drew's best friend for seven more years. They were inseparable. Danny dragged Drew out of the library and introduced him to a whole new world -- music. Danny brought Drew to his house, where they played through his parents' entire collection of CDs. Then Danny would whip out some pots, pans, and spoons and start drumming. They used to bang out drum solos like no one's business, and when they couldn't think up their own, they would teach themselves the drum parts to their favorite songs and play along while the song played [ROBIN OWNS YOUR FACE =D] over the stereo. Danny also took Drew shopping, introducing him to the edgier side of fashion. He started Drew drinking coffee, and they both got their ears gaged together.
FACT SIX :: During the later years in their friendship, Danny started to say things. Rebellious things. He spoke of carving his own guitar, and how it was ridiculous that The Government forbade the playing of musical instruments. Drew, being the good kid he was, argued that there was a reason people weren't allowed to play. He said exactly what his parents had taught him -- that music lead to rebellion, rebellion lead to chaos, and chaos lead to the end of humanity. Danny would laugh Drew off and tell him that The Government fed people "that bullshit" so they could hold on to their power. He told Drew of Reapers, and how he'd seen one. Apparently, one of Danny's other best friends (whom Drew had never met) had been assassinated by a Reaper. The Reaper tried to kill Danny as well, but Danny had slipped away while the Reaper was busy with his friend. Drew refused to believe this. He got into a fight with Danny and ran home to his parents. When he told them what Danny had said, his parents got very quiet and exchanged looks. What did they say then? "The Government knows all, we know nothing."
FACT SEVEN :: Learning that his friend had spoken the truth, Drew left a note on his doorstep. It read, "You were right. I'm sorry for storming off like that. Meet me at the coffee shop tomorrow?" Drew waited all day at that coffee shop. Danny never showed. Drew stopped by Danny house again. When he knocked on the door, Danny's mother answered. Her eyes were red and puffy, as though she'd been crying. When Drew asked if he could see Danny, she broke down and collapsed on the front mat. She didn't need to say it -- Drew knew. Danny was dead. Looks like the Reaper had gotten to him after all. Ever since then, Drew has hated The Government. He longs for rebellion, but at the same time, he's afraid that a Reaper will come for him too. So he keeps quiet, biding his time.
